ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE

Den Mi Wesu – meaning “in my bones” in Papiamentu – is a theatrical deep dive into the origins of spiritual experience and how rhythmic expressions amplify it. It involves an excavation of instruments, voice, and movement through which Michael Wanga wants to uncover his own roots.

As a lot of the Curaçaoan people, Michael is a descendant of two strong tribes. On one side, the native people that have survived on the Caribbean islands and on the other side, the enslaved people that were brought there from Africa.

As a part of the new generation of diaspora descendant, Michael seeks a connection with his ancestors. The bond is derived from rhythm and sprituality, which he wants to explore through the stories and sounds that shaped the island. He looks for Caribbean artists and a new generation of talent, to share the experience.

FOR PARTICIPANTS:

Together we are doing research on the way we experience rhythm, and we build it into a theatre piece. We’re going to explore what comes from within, intuitively. We will learn about musical traditions of Curaçao, such as reinterpret meaning of nursery rhymes and learn to play new (or old) instruments. We will touch upon our colonial past, to see how this still impacts how we experience our culture and religion. So we can start from the ground up, to build a new level of engagement with our ancestral spirituality. Using our voices, instruments and movement.
